Emerging Science
The wonders of aspirin are continuing to grow. Bayer sponsors leading-edge clinical research that continues to uncover the science behind aspirin's lifesaving roles.

This website discusses uses of aspirin not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Today people take aspirin for pain relief and heart attack protection. For tomorrow, scientists are studying the potential for aspirin to help against diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's. It's actually one of the most studied drugs in the world. Aspirin continues to be at the forefront of emerging science.

Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Events

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and disability in the U.S., affecting men, women, and all ethnic groups; yet it is largely a preventable disease. Today, approximately 100 million people may be at risk of developing CHD, and as many as 62 million Americans already have some form of heart disease and may be at risk of experiencing a coronary event.

Despite advances in risk assessment and the availability of effective interventions, too few individuals are modifying their risk for cardiovascular events. Important first steps include diet and exercise. In some cases, an aspirin regimen may be appropriate.

Aspirin is one of the most extensively studied drugs in history, with a well-established efficacy and safety profile across a range of doses for preventing heart attack and recurrent stroke. The broader use of aspirin in appropriate patients can help prevent heart attacks and their related physical, emotional and financial costs - and it costs just pennies a day.

A review of six landmark studies demonstrates that an aspirin regimen can reduce the risk of non-fatal heart attack by up to 30%.

Based on the available evidence, the American Heart Association and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommend that doctors consider aspirin therapy for the prevention of a first heart attack in all appropriate individuals identified to be at increased risk for cardiovascular events (6-10% or greater over 10 years).

Bayer Aspirin is committed to improving public health through the safe and appropriate use of aspirin to help prevent cardiovascular events.

Currently, Bayer is conducting the ARRIVE (Aspirin to Reduce Risk of Initial Vascular Events) trial. ARRIVE is one of the largest clinical studies ever conducted in a population at moderate risk of initial events associated with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease (CVD). Bayer’s ARRIVE trial will expand the already existing, strong body of evidence supporting use of Aspirin for primary prevention of events associated with CVD. Bayer supports charitable contributions and education that encourage patient/physician dialogue about cardiovascular risk and management; in doing so, Bayer has helped prevent thousands of cardiovascular events.

Bayer is proud to take the lead in building support for a public health partnership that engages regulators, the medical community and patients to more clearly identify appropriate candidates for aspirin therapy.
