Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
For patients taking low-dose aspirin to prevent cardiovascular events, preliminary research indicates that an additional benefit - the prevention of another potentially life-threatening problem called Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) in those at risk - may accrue as well.

This website discusses uses of aspirin not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

A study in patients undergoing hip surgery - a common risk factor for DVT - showed a five week course of low-dose Bayer Aspirin cut the risk of Pulmonary Embolism (PE) and DVT by a third. The number of deaths from PE was halved (PEP Trial); these results are confirmed by a meta-analysis of low-dose aspirin usage in patients with a broader range of conditions (i.e. general or orthopedic surgery, other types of immobility).

While the evidence for aspirin use in DVT prevention to date is interesting, additional research is needed to confirm aspirin's efficacy and safety for this use in appropriate patients. As the makers of Bayer® Aspirin, we are committed to working with the scientific community to maximize the utility of aspirin as scientific support evolves.

Consumers are advised to consult their physicians regarding their risk factors and appropriate prevention strategies for cardiovascular events and for DVT. The determination of who is an appropriate candidate for aspirin therapy should be made with a health professional.
